One thing…many words…
‘Cucur…Cekodok…Jemput-jemput’…and they all mean the same thing…at least for where I come from dat is…It is so weird that I am in a western country but I am more in tune and very much in touch with my roots more than when I was back home…Majority of my friends here surprisingly are not Aussies but Singaporeans and Malaysians from the same ethnicity…And it is from them that i learned more about my own culture and it’s not like I had ever forgotten my own roots but I was more comfortable conversing in English with my friends back home and our Malay, although similar in writing, is different in speech and delivery because of each country’s and state’s unique street slang. i think I can talk to my dad in Malaysian Malay now cos’ before I couldn’t fully understand him and my cousins in Malaysia now so they dun think we are arrogant or anti-social…hahaha…Tapi mungkin dorang nanti masih tak faham ape yang aku cakap, kot? hahaha…I think my sisters are gonna slap me if I use the word ‘kot’ all da time when I go back or they might even disown me as their sibling…hahaha…Anyway, I wasn’t saying that as a Malay, I can’t speak my own language…And yes, Naz…I do understand most of what people are saying…its just that it’s harder to respond back in the same lingo but not now…hahaha…
REFLECTIONs OF DA DAY:
- Singaporean Malays tend to mix Malay and English when they converse, thus tarnish the purity of the language…
- Malays in different countries have their own unique slang and street talk, so it is not my fault if I can’t understand what is being said initially…
- The beauty of the language and culture is gone the moment westernisation took place…Watching Puteri Gunung Ledang made me realise the true beauty of my culture and the language in the olden days
- Absence do make the heart grows fonder in this case and in an unfamiliar environment, one tends to grasp at whatever is familiar and soothing…
- Why is this entry starting to look like a plan for a an essay?!! Better stop now…
P.S: Whatever is written is based on my personal feelings and thoughts. It is not meant for dissing anyone or anything…Cheers!
